Early leprosy control

Sharing knowledge and experience

Our Technical Department has up-to-date knowledge on all aspects of leprosy, which is embedded in the programs we support. Sharing this knowledge and experience by creating awareness in the community and contributing to the training of health staff improves early case detection. Nearly 50 years later, NLR is an international forerunner in freeing the world of leprosy and of exclusion due to disabilities.

Research and innovation

Ongoing research and innovation improves existing programmes. Research shows for example that strategies aimed at screening close contacts of leprosy patients in combination with prophylactic treatment of these contacts can reduce their risk of developing leprosy very significantly.

Quality and coverage of contact tracing

Improving the quality and coverage of contact tracing contributes significantly to early reporting of symptoms and detection of new cases. Patients can be cured within 6 to 12 months using three antibiotics (multi-drug therapy (MDT)). By supporting or facilitating such activities, we contribute to prevention of disabilities and further transmission of leprosy.
